Smart People Magazine is a periodical published monthly by Associated Professional Services (APS), Sun City Center, Florida, US.
Mission Statement: SP will help its readers discover the power of personal and collaborative knowledge in the digital age; provide inspiration, information and education; and help people use knowledge to gain personal fulfillment by seizing the opportunities of a world without borders.
Company Goals and Objectives: As the premier journal for people who use knowledge to be better at everything they do, SP magazine will succeed by becoming the leader in news, feature, editorial and service for knowledge holders, searchers, users, workers and managers, by developing a publication that is significant, financially viable and increasing in value as it expands its services to meet changing needs.
Business Philosophy: In a knowledge-driven world, there is no such thing as a person whose life has not been changed by the knowledge phenomenon. The source of all knowledge is people – individually or collectively. Access to the Internet and online networking has dismantled barriers to knowledge personally, politically, socially and economically. Knowledge work is the critical success factor for both people and organizations. It’s a good time to know you’re smart and a good time to capitalize on it.
Industry Description: Knowledge management (strategic work with knowledge in organizations) has enjoyed a high profile for the past two decades among the business world, with a growing adoption of its principles in Fortune 1,000 and other knowledge-driven companies worldwide. Results have been mixed depending on the management model used and the level of commitment.
Recently, observers have reported that KM is migrating from core academic and thought leaders, gurus, consultants and pioneer practitioners to business units within the existing organizational structure such as HR, Library and Information Science, Learning, Research, Project Management and Development. KM is becoming embedded in most every aspect of the business process. Along with that movement, the people who are engaged in some aspect of knowledge work/management multiplies. Whole professional and trade groups are now exploring the meaning of knowledge work and management.
The knowledge phenomenon is growing by leaps and bounds as people take charge of their own lives, doing online research and communication, making business transactions and virtual friends. The importance of knowledge grows as we work with boundary-spanning challenges ranging from competition in a globalized world through climate change to communication in our families and communities across generations. The growth in interest and need to know more about knowledge work grows exponentially.
While early KM had a prospective audience of thousands of professional practitioners, knowledge work (KW) has an untapped market of millions.
The Smart People Advantage
The architects of Smart People Magazine include KM pioneers, social networkers, management consultants, business and knowledge practitioners, business experts, prospective contributors and customers. The process is, in itself, a model of knowledge work – a collaborative undertaking. Unlike traditional start-ups, we begin not by just polling prospective customers, but by having them seated at the table as architects and at the virtual work site where the magazine is to be produced.
In addition, Jerry Ash
- is a former journalism professor, editor, publisher, writer and author;
- is a subject expert in knowledge management;
- is a well-known leader in the knowledge management field;
- founded the Association of Knowledgework (AOK) in the year 2000;
- has four years experience 2005-2009 as writer and managing editor of Inside Knowledge magazine; and
- is an experienced manager, executive and entrepreneur.
Michele Ash is a graphic designer and editor of publications including books, magazines and newsletters.
Legal form of ownership: Smart People Magazine is a wholly owned project of Associated Professional Services, a 30-year for-profit sole proprietorship owned by Michele Linn Ash. Regardless of ownership, Smart People magazine will be a profit-sharing business model.
